Rock ‘n’ Roll meets dance in ‘Freddie: Break Free’

by Lizzy Nyoike | A&E Reporter | Published March 23, 2026

At a time when ballet is seen as uptight, Ballet Co.Laboratory is working to redefine that.

This spring, the St. Paul-based ballet company will showcase “Freddie: Break Free,” a rock ballet inspired by the life and legacy of Freddie Mercury, lead singer and pianist for the British rock band Queen. The performance is set to show April 10–12 at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, blending classical ballet with the energy of rock music.

For Artistic Director Zoé Henrot, the idea behind the show is rooted in breaking barriers, both within ballet and the audience.

“I really wanted to see what I could do as far as not only melding the art form with different ideas, but in doing so, melding audiences together as well,” Henrot said.
