Amaya Battle’s legacy was never just her shot
by Samantha Roering | Published April 2, 2026
Amaya Battle’s legacy as a Gopher was never going to come down to a single shot, not after spending all four years wearing the “M” and sticking through a coaching change.
Yet, there will always be the moment she drained the game-winning shot that sent Minnesota to its first Sweet 16 in more than 20 years.
That is the type of highlight that follows a player forever, but for Battle, it is not the full story. It might not even be the most important part.
When Battle chose Minnesota, the program was a few years past its last national tournament appearance. There were no guarantees of national relevance or making runs in March.
