Daily Breakdown

Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025

Good morning,

Nothing gets me more hyped about news then the investigations desk. It’s the clandestine wing of the Daily, and our reporters are always running ops. We’ll have some feature pieces releasing for ya in the coming days, but for now enjoy what we’ve written so far.

Today we have an investigation into UMore Park’s environmental legacy, a feature on a star hockey goaltender, a piece on updated electric scooter guidelines, a video looking into the Kristi Noem ICE protests and more.

Get hyped. Get your news.

Godspeed,

Sam Hill | Managing Editor | [email protected]

UMore Park land sold to Meta: From hazardous legacy to tech sale

by Rakeb Azeze | Investigative Reporter | Published Oct. 27, 2025

The University of Minnesota has long positioned itself as a global leader in environmental sustainability. Yet its recent $40 million land sale to Meta Platforms has sparked backlash from students and raised questions about the University’s sustainability practices.

Ranked in the top 10% worldwide and fifth in the U.S. in the 2025 Times Higher Ed Sustainability Impact rankings, the University has adopted ambitious goals, from cutting emissions by 60% to reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.

Despite these ambitions, the Board of Regents approved the sale of 280 acres of the University of Minnesota Outreach Research and Education Park to Meta Platforms. This deal, valued at nearly $40 million, will allow the tech giant to construct an AI-optimized data center at the University’s campus, raising doubts about the University’s commitment to its sustainability promises.
