Daily Breakdown
Wednesday, April 8, 2026
Hello to the people reading this newsletter. I appreciate the time you took to do that. You’re probably busy and have other things to do, but here you are. I respect that, so I will get straight into what we have for you.
On city, Minnesota lawmakers proposed a $200,000 grant to a nonprofit that provides assistance dogs to people with disabilities. On sports, an article about Gophers gymnastics’ performance at regionals. On campus, faculty reaction to the University’s AI policy. There’s more, but I want to keep this brief.
Stay golden,

Lawmakers propose a grant to Helping Paws honoring late Rep. Melissa Hortman
by Jingyuan Liu | City Reporter | Published April 7, 2026
A $200,000 grant moving through the Minnesota Legislature aims to honor former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her family dog, Gilbert.
The funding, backed by Rep. Robert Bierman (DFL-Apple Valley), would go to Helping Paws, a nonprofit that provides assistance dogs to people with disabilities.
For Helping Paws Executive Director Alyssa Golob, the effort is both personal and meaningful.
“This is a bill of love and hope,” Golob said. “It’s a beautiful way to keep Melissa’s legacy alive.”
