Happy Friday Freakaziods,
Today marks the last time I’ll have the honor of crashing your inbox with my loony ramblings. I hope they gave you a chuckle. I’ve spent the better part of the last three years working for the Minnesota Daily, and it’s been one of the greatest experiences of my life.
If you’ve siphoned any information, joy or intellectual stimulation from the more than 1400 stories we’ve published in the last 12 months, thanks for taking the time to read our stuff. Plus, we have a few more stories to throw your way before we kick rocks and leave you in the capable hands of Alexis. (By the way, most of our graduating reporters and editors don’t have a job locked down yet. If you like what we’ve put together and want to give us money to do it for you, we’d be more than happy to oblige.)
Plus, if you’re really bummed to see me go, there’s a podcast down there with me, Amelia and Kaylie reflecting on our time at the Daily. Give it a listen. Kaylie almost cries.
And, for the last time, take it easy,
Spencer White | Editor-in-Chief | [email protected]

A lot has changed since the first arrival of international students 150 years ago, yet their impact remains.
by Valentina Contreras | Published May 8, 2025
The impact of international students on campus has grown since the University of Minnesota celebrated its first international student on campus 150 years ago.
The University is home to over 6,000 international students, making up more than 10% of the total student body. It is rated 38th among research institutions in the international student population.
International students have made an impact on the University from the start.
The first international students from China arrived in 1914 and led the University’s soccer team. In 1949, the Minnesota Agricultural Student Trainee program was founded, which brought in students from around the world to learn agriculture skills that they could practice in their home country.
The National Defense Education Act was signed in 1958, which provided federal funding and support to universities with international students. In the 1990s, the University became home to over 3,000 students within programs in many different fields.
Throughout the years of hosting international students, the University has built strong connections with other countries, including research, partnerships and exchanges with local universities and organizations abroad.
