Daily Breakdown
Thursday, Dec. 11, 2025
Good morning everyone,
The opinions desk at the Daily is like the soft arm of the CIA. While our other desks are busting faces for facts, Opinions stories have a diplomatic, tasteful spin — and their desk decision story today made me laugh, so check it out.
For city, we have an ICE Augsburg piece, city council weighs in on updating the immigration separation ordinance, and a Mississippi river art gallery fundraiser. For opinions, check out a holiday conversation-themed desk decision and a column about the meaning of holiday spirit. For arts and entertainment, an “Eternity” movie review. And finally for campus, we are getting a new UMPD police chief.
I hope you enjoy!
See you starside,

Residents weigh in on updating the immigration separation ordinance
by Maya Bell | City Reporter | Published Dec. 10, 2025
The Minneapolis City Council held a public hearing on Dec. 9 to update the immigration separation ordinance, after increased Immigration and Customs Enforcement activity in Minnesota.
Under the current ordinance, the Minneapolis Police Department is not allowed to provide immigration information or support to federal officers.
The new ordinance would ban access to city-owned lots or parking for ICE deployments. If the city becomes aware of an ongoing enforcement action, city officials must provide a report to the city council, according to city documents.
Mayor Jacob Frey recently signed an executive order banning ICE from using city-owned parking lots for federal investigations.
