On Saturday at Washburn Fair Oaks in Minneapolis, thousands of cyclists gathered to ride in honor of University of Minnesota graduate Alex Pretti, the man killed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents on Jan. 24.
The event was the culmination of a week of organizing by local bike shops, but quickly expanded into a global movement.
In the immediate aftermath of Pretti’s killing, organizers from the Angry Catfish Bicycle shop in south Minneapolis announced a memorial ride to honor Pretti, who was an avid cyclist in the Twin Cities. Organizer Jarrod Alder, an employee at Angry Catfish, said that as a small business that has been open for 16 years, there was a responsibility to give back to the community during this moment.
