Daily Breakdown

Oh, what a year it has been! Today is the last newsletter you will get from me, as I am graduating and leaving the Daily. I won’t get too sappy, but thanks for clicking on our emails this past year, even if it was just to get rid of the notification. I appreciate the interaction with our content, please continue to do that.

The end of the semester does not stop the news from flowing. City desk covers potential cuts Minneapolis Public Schools face and the people fighting to keep important programs going. Campus looks at how community advisers approach managing Territorial Hall, which has been dubbed the “party dorm.” Opinions brings you two satire pieces, one introducing a “future” American Girl doll, the other asking if heterosexuals are the problem.

As always, there’s a bit of something for everyone, if you look closely.

Stay golden,

Minnesota public schools face cuts as students and teachers fight to save vital programs

by Shay Scanlan | City Reporter | Published May 7, 2026

At Minneapolis’ Longfellow Alternative High School for teen parents this spring, teen mothers organized and attended school board meetings — children in tow — to advocate against funding cuts.

The cuts would have left the students with no full-time teachers next year.

Last week, Minneapolis Public Schools identified a multiyear failure to maximize state special education revenue. The district now expects to receive more than $20 million in additional state funding, reducing its budget shortfall for next year to about $40 million.

For Longfellow, the additional funding this year means restoring full-time teaching positions in core subjects such as math and science. The possibility of losing all full-time school staff shook students, as they contended with the loss of comfort and community that the school’s staff brings, said Longfellow social studies teacher Mitchell Jones.
