Edwin Josue Toalombo spent more than three months in a detention center after United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers detained him and his father in January. Now, he is trying to return to his studies at the University of Minnesota.

“I’m gonna fight to stay here, complete my four-year degree and I’m gonna try my best,” Toalombo said.

Toalombo was detained on Jan. 11 along with his father, Santiago, who chose not to use his real name for fear of retaliation. He said immigration officials held him in a detention center in El Paso, Texas, until April 16, while Santiago was released in early February. 

Toalombo’s education was interrupted halfway through his first year as a computer science student when he was detained.
